Types of Sugar

There are different types of sugars, some are processed and some occur naturally.

Most of our sugar comes from sugar cane, which is grown and then processed into different products such as white sugar, icing sugar and even golden syrup.

Natural sugars could be fructose which is found in fruit, or lactose found in milk.

Sugar as Energy

We need sugars in our daily diet as they are a source of energy.  When eaten, the body breaks down the sugars which go into the blood for the cells in the body to use.

The body uses this energy for essential functions to keep us alive as well as allowing us to move, work and play.  When we are doing physical activities our body uses up more energy.

Not so Sweet

Because there is often hidden sugars in our food we need to be aware of the ingredients.

Too much sugar in our diet can lead to tooth decay, weight gain and can lead to certain illnesses as people get older such as heart disease.

Reducing Sugar Intake

Sometimes it can be hard to know the amount of sugar we are eating.

We can control this by reading the ingredient list and nutrition information that is on our packaged foods, and choosing foods that have less sugar.

Have water and low fat milk as our first choice, instead of soft drinks and fruit juices.
